Keeping Up with the Tariff Wars: Why Procurement Pros Can’t Tune Out

The global tariff front is shifting again—and fast.

On July 9, 2025, President Trump issued fresh tariff letters to emerging economies like the Philippines, Moldova, Iraq, Brunei, Algeria, Libya, Sri Lanka, plus major materials and goods categories—starting August 1.

For example, a 50% levy on copper, along with 25–30% rates on pharmaceuticals, autos, semiconductors and more, is now on the table (TIME).

The twist? Nobody knows how these countries will retaliate—or if they’ll strike deals to avoid them. While the EU, UK, and Vietnam have reached provisional agreements, others remain in limbo .

That leaves us in an extended cycle of policy whiplash, where every week brings new surprises and shifting timelines.

Why this matters for procurement and supply-chain pros:

1. Cost unpredictability: As tariffs bounce unpredictably between 20%–50%, landed costs fluctuate wildly.

2. Sourcing fungibility: Need agility to pivot from one supplier or jurisdiction to another—and reroute logistics.

3. Planning paralysis: Budgets, contracts, inventory—they all get tangled when tariff moves come without warning.

Unless you’re constantly monitoring not just U.S. moves but also how partners and rivals react, you’re flying blind.

From Supply Chain Dive to WSJ to AP, the narrative is clear: this isn’t a short skirmish—it’s a long slog (PBS, tipalti.com).
