My AI – 6 Ways to Get AI to Have Your Skills and Voice
I’ve been using AI almost every day for the past two years, and here’s the truth: in the beginning, it felt a lot like managing a brand-new intern—AI was full of enthusiasm, eager to help, but with very little wisdom.
Back then, when I asked AI to complete a task, the results were maybe 30% correct. It was helpful as a starting point, but not much more than that.
But today? With the right process, when I give AI a clear task, it produces output that is 80–90% correct, aligned with my tone, my logic, and my expectations. Now, instead of rewriting, I’m refining and adding insight.
And because of the practical value this brings, we’ve added an AI component to all APD training programs, and we now offer a dedicated AI-specific training course designed to help purchasing professionals accelerate results using structured AI methods. Click here for more information.
How to Train AI to Think and Work Like You
1. Treat AI Like an Intern—Then Like a Colleague
AI learns through repetition. Early on, it doesn’t know your standards, tone, or expectations—so you need to show it.
The more examples you provide, the faster it learns.
2. Explain Your Reasoning, Not Just Your Request
If you want AI to reflect your thought process, let it observe how you think.
3. Build Repeatable Prompt Structures
Eventually, I realized I was answering the same questions repeatedly. So I built templates.
4. Give AI Detailed Feedback—Often
Precision feedback creates precision output.
5. Let AI Draft—You Do the Final 10–20%
AI shouldn’t replace your thinking—it should accelerate it. Remember to provide your finished work back to AI.
6. AI Questions Before It Starts
Before you ask AI to work for you, ask AI:
“Before you start, are there any questions you have for me that would make your response better?”
Three additional questions:
- What assumptions are you making in your response?
- What information is missing that would help you give a more accurate or more tailored answer?
- After reviewing the edits I made to your work, do you have any questions about why I made the edits?
Final Thought: AI Learns Who You Are by Watching What You Fix
Two years ago, AI could only give me 30% of what I needed. Today, it gives me 80–90%, and I spend my time adding insight—not fixing mistakes.
If you want AI to have your skills, your voice, and your judgment, don’t think of it as software. Think of it as a teammate you’re coaching.
And if you want your team—or your entire organization—to accelerate this learning curve, remember:👉 We’ve added AI components to all APD training courses.
